What do you get when you mix a Midwest flare and a Southern style with sundry lyrics and mind-boggling tracks? You get a rap group who is hurriedly rising to the top: The Replacementz.
Ju1ce, a 2006 graduate of CAU with a degree in Business Marketing from Chicago, IL and Tec Beatz, a senior Mass Media Arts major of Gainesville, GA make up The Replacementz. In reference to their name, they said in an Ozone Magazine article, "To us, the name The Replacementz just means being able to do what you feel."
They have numerous hits including, We So Fly, Yes I Am, and I'm Hollywood, which has acquired them the diverse fan base that they have now. They also have two mixtapes in addition to their album sucess, The Panic Room Vols. 1 and 2, both hosted by DJ Canon of the Aphilliates, and are working on their third mixtape.
As far as producing, these guys are really on their grind. "We set up the first campus studio…out of Heritage [Commons]," recalled Ju1ce. They produced the street anthem Pop Off by rapper Lil Scrappy, I Know Y'all Mad by Busta Rhymes featuring Mike Jones, Boi by Busta Rhymes, and numerous other tracks.
Their chemistry in and out of the studio is what has aided in solidified their success. "It's funny, because we stayed right down the hall from each other in New Residence and didn't know each other freshman year. We met up sophomore year, clicked with the music, and then became tight. He's like my brother now," stated Ju1ce.
The fact that The Replacementz grew up listening to an array of music from classical to jazz has affected their style. Although they are inspired by "the greats" Kanye West, Timbaland, Dre and others, they have their own mark to leave on the rap industry. "The inspiration right now, between us two, really is just trying to do something different-something fresh, new. Not necessarily something that someone has never heard before, but some new stuff. We're trying to innovate a new style of music," said Tec Beatz.
