The reconstruction of neighboring University Homes, which neighbors Clark Atlanta, continues the revamping of the area.
Verna Mobly, President of University Homes, says that if we continue to look like people in poverty, people will continue to be in poverty, therefore, many older neighborhoods are being remodeled to give the community a cleaner look.
The process of stage one for the remodeling session started in January 2007 and is planned to be completed in February 2008, according to the management staff of University Homes.
All residents were informed that they would be moving out of their homes in 2005, which gave the residents enough time to decide what area they where going to relocate to. Many chose homes containing three and four bedrooms, according
to University Homes' Management.
At first the residents said they were not ready for the change, but after realizing the benefits of living in a better environment and community they were ready to embrace the change, stated the management staff of University Homes.
The residents have a choice as far as where they want to be relocated, which makes it easier and more convenient to their everyday lifestyles.
The government is also taking the effort to pay for wherever the residents choose to reside.
There are about 167 residents still on the premises, but all remaining residents have from 90 to 120 days to evacuate
the premises, though residents are still taking their time according to University Homes' management.
Resident Portricia Newberry stated, "Change is good, but I am a little sad to see it go because I had been living here for about eight years and this will conflict with my daughter's schooling." Resident Nikki Carrecter
agreed, "It will interfere with all of the children's schooling and they all have to change schools."
Searching for a brighter side, Newberry also said, "Overall I am ready to get up out of there and away from the rats and roaches y'all can have em'." Carrecter felt "the apartments were too small anyway."
Mobly states the remodeling will benefit the Clark Atlanta Campus because it will not only look better but there will be a lower tolerance for crime with only 20 percent of the old residents returning. Students will also be allowed to reside in the new and improved neighborhood, but financial aid will not be linked with those living arrangements.
"Oh, I wasn't sure what they were going to do with that area," stated sophomore and mass media major Ashley Davidson. "That may be where I may end up next year then."
University Homes' management says after the remodeling
is complete the apartments will look something like Ashley
College Town apartments that are located across the street from the Morehouse Stadium.
