After the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti, there are over 100,000 people that died, including 22 United Nations peacekeepers and more people homeless and injured.
President Obama said on Jan. 14, "To the people of Haiti, we say clearly and with conviction, you will not be forsaken. You will not be forgotten. In this, your hour of greatest need, America stands with you. The world stands with you."
As students, there are many ways to help those in Haiti who were affected by this natural disaster. There are many sources to go to, but be aware of spam as well.
1) The American Red Cross- they are the most widely known organization working in Haiti. They accept online donations, help volunteers to plan giving time or support. They accept $10 donations through cell phone by texting HAITI to 90999. The charge will be placed on your cell phone bill.
2) AmeriCares has pledged $5 million to Haitian earthquake relief and is soliciting for donations to help accomplish this. This organization has helped people throughout the world who were plagued by natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, ice storms disease outbreaks, war and poverty.
3) The Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund- Haitian-born musicians Wyclef Jean started this fund which offers $5 text message donations by texting YELE to 501501
4) Medical services are needed, so if you or someone you know is a physician, American Airlines is setting up a donation page on their web site to work on getting flights for doctors and nurses who can help in Haiti
5) For Darfur Inc and Doctors Without Borders have announced a partnership with major recording artists to promote a "Concert for Haiti" in Miami. One of every ticket sale will go to Doctor's Without Borders to aid for families displaced by the earthquake.
